Pregnancy Support Counselling

what is pregnancy support counsellingBrisbane Psychologist Laura Fleming is eligible to provide Pregnancy Support Counselling under Medicare, and explains the intentions of the program.

Some psychologists are specially trained to offer non directive, unbiased and supportive therapeutic intervention to women who are pregnant or have been pregnant in the last 12 months.

Known as Pregnancy Support Counselling, the government helps to fund it through a Medicare rebate. Pregnancy Support Counselling provides for three sessions of counselling when the client has been referred by a GP under this program (this is separate to the commonly known Mental Health Care Plans).

Following the three sessions there are other pathways to receive further care. A women’s partner is welcome to attend sessions with the permission of the client.

Support for a Range of Concerns

This counselling can be for issues not related to mental health – including parenting issues, healthcare, relationship concerns, career decisions, discussion of options available (to go through with the pregnancy, adopt out, terminate), models of perinatal care, as well as grief counselling if a pregnancy is lost.

Pregnancy can be exhilarating and scary. Anxieties can be raised, relationships can be stressed in anticipation of the birth, or following the birth with the added burden of looking after a little one and suffering sleep deprivation. A psychologist will listen and provide support based on the identified goals of the client. There is never any judgement on how a pregnancy occurred, the decisions made during pregnancy or plans following pregnancy.

If you are pregnant, or have had a baby recently, and feel that you would benefit from counselling at this time, contact your GP to ask about Pregnancy Support Counselling.
